How 'Bout Them Reads: Heart of the Matter

Tessa Russo is a stay-at-home mother of two and wife to a busy pediatric surgeon, Nick. She lives a rewarding, yet at times frustrating life. She gave up her career in order to be at home all the time, which leaves her often times feeling a bit empty. But that doesn't mean she doesn't love her children and husband. Her world is just smaller and full of busy-body moms and planning out snacks.

Valerie Anderson, on the other hand, is a single mother who works full time as an attorney, trying to give her son the best life she can. Like any single parent, she tries to full the void of not having a father the best she can. She is always trying to do the best she can by her son.

But the night she agreed to let her son go to a birthday party was one that would forever change all of their lives. An accident led all their lives to collide. After Valerie's son, Charlie, is badly burned, it is Nick, the renowned pediatric surgeon, who steps up to be the hero in their story. Nick soon finds himself involved and interested in Valerie and Charlie's lives, and Tessa begins to feel the distance. Before long, Nick and Valerie start an innocent friendship that leads to a not so innocent romance. Tessa suspects Nick is having an affair, and she is powerless to do anything about it.

All three find themselves in an impossible situation, being tested in ways they never thought they would. Who will Nick chose? His wife of countless years or this new woman who he found himself in love with? How will Valerie and Tessa handle this situation doing what is best for themselves but also what is best for their children?

I have read Emily Giffin before. I have actually read several books by her and I have always enjoyed them. She really gives you characters that you feel for even though what they are doing is morally wrong. She writes them in a way where you feel sorry for them, but at the same time angry that they are making that decision that puts everyone in that situation. You can feel feel how conflicted her characters are. I have always enjoyed her books and I look forward to reading more books by her in the future.
