Eat Dessert First: Easy Apple Turnovers

How long has it been since I have done one of these? A seriously long time! But here I am. Another dessert! Yay!

Dessert Brought To You By: The America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook

Here's What You Need:
2 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and chopped coarse
3/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 (9 by 9 1/2 inch) sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed
Flour for the counter
1/2 cup applesauce
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Here's What You Do:
Adjust two oven racks to the upper - and lower - middle position head the oven to 400 degrees. Pulse the apples, 1/2 cup of the sugar, lemon juice, and salt in a food processor until the apples are coarsely ground, about 5 pulses. Let the apple mixture sit for 5 minutes, then drain through a strainer, reserving any accumulated juice.

Unfold one sheet of the puff pastry on a lightly floured counter and roll into a 10-inch square. Cut the pastry into four 5-inch squares. Mound 1 tablespoon applesauce and 1 tablespoon of the apple mixture in the center of each square. Brush the edges of each square with the strained apple juice and fold into triangles. Crimp the edges together with a fork to seal. Lay the turnovers on a wire rack and freeze for 15 minutes (or refrigerate for 30 minutes). Repeat with the remaining set of pastry, applesauce and apple filling.

Toss the remaining 1/4 cup sugar with cinnamon. Remove the rack from freezer, brush the turnovers with the reserved apple juice, then sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar. Lay the turnovers on two parchment-lined baking sheets and bake until well-browned, 20 to 26 minutes, rotating and switching the baking sheet halfway through baking. Transfer the turnovers to a wire rack and let slightly before serving. Makes 8.

And this was an amazingly good dessert to start back on. Seriously delicious. It was so good. I mean seriously good. I cannot tell you how good. You just need to try them for yourself.

As far as this recipe goes, this was an easy dessert to make. And definitely worth the short amount time of it took to make it. I did a bit of a rookie move by not completely reading all the directions fully. I read the directions but didn't seem to fully read the directions because I didn't see that I needed to strain the apple juices into a bowl to keep and use. Luckily I made it work.

I don't know what I can say about these other than they were delicious. They were wonderful. They will be made again. And again. And again. And again...
