This pregnancy in so many ways has been the hardest in terms of food. I expected the struggle during the first trimester because I have never had an easy first trimester, but I didn't exactly expect that struggle to continue into the second trimester.
I had a lot of aversions during my first trimester, but they weren't really so much aversions as food that just made me throw up, so I just didn't want it. Food was pretty much in two categories: makes me throw up and doesn't. I definitely couldn't seem to figure out what was setting me off though. What I was doing was throwing up almost every day, multiple times a days. It was really rough. If I got too hungry then I would get sick. If I ate too fast, I would get sick. If I had too many carbs, too much protein, too much sugar. It just didn't seem to matter. It made for a miserable first trimester.
My rare cravings were constantly changing. Sometimes I craved chips. Sometimes I craved pizza. Often I craved fresh foods. I would eat something one day then the next I couldn't stand it. Rob joked that it was a good thing he was willing to eat anything. But really mostly I just didn't want to eat. I didn't want to think about food. Which turned out to be an issue for the person who does the meal planning around the house.
By the time I got into the second trimester I was so tired of food. I didn't exactly expect it to instantly change once we got into the second trimester, but I guess I had hoped it would. It took a week or two but my hormones shifted and I started throwing up only every other day. Then another couple weeks later and I was only throwing up every three days. It felt like a miracle.
On top of that I was starting to get hungry. I was actually wanting to eat. Of course my problems continued because I just didn't crave things. Or at least rarely did. But I was definitely wanting to eat.
Getting sick these days are a pretty rare occurrence that usually only happens when it's been awhile since I've eaten or those rare moments that I just struggle with too much sugar, carbs, or whatever else. My biggest struggle now is definitely trying to figure out what to eat. I feel like I'm wanting to eat all the time. I have definitely become a small meals all day long kind of eater. I don't know what to eat just about ever.
I go between a very fresh lunch that I meal prep at the beginning of the week to frozen lunches. Sometimes I snack on chips and I'm fine and other times I can't stand them and they give me really bad stomachaches. I usually eat an orange at night before bed. I eat cereal in the mornings - eggs actually make me throw up no matter how I cook them.
This pregnancy has definitely been a lot like my pregnancy with Addison. I remember struggling with morning sickness throughout my entire pregnancy with her, and never really getting the food thing down. I also haven't gained a lot of weight with this pregnancy either. Actually I think I have only gained about a two pounds total so far. But not from a lack of trying. I'm just struggling with food.
I have definitely wondered if I am getting enough to provide for Emma. And I'm doing the best I can trying to find healthy meals that I can actually eat and don't make me sick. I can't even remember a time when I didn't struggle with food, although Rob promises me that there was. Maybe before this pregnancy is over I will get a handle on food in some way and find something I actually enjoy eating.
