I have always wished that I was better at home decor. But I struggle with my design style and what I want. There are many areas of this house, that we have lived in for almost three years now, that I still haven't done anything about. But I have decided to inch my way around the house and work through my design flaws.
I decided to start with the half bath on our main level. There was no good reason for starting here other than I decided it was a small room and the easiest to do. That's about as simple as it gets.
There was nothing in the room at all other than things you typically find in a bathroom. So I started brainstorming what I wanted in the bathroom and went to the handy Pinterest to get ideas. I then started looking online to find what I was looking for. Some things were easier to find than others but slowly I started putting a plan together.
BEFORE
On top of having no idea what I actually wanted to do, I knew it was going to take me awhile because I am keeping myself to a budget each month so it was going to take some time to actually put it all together. But with a tight budget it also means I have a lot of time to think it through and figure out how it is coming together and change the plan as I go.
I had a basic idea of what I wanted with some wall decor across from the toilet and also toyed around with some kind of shelving above of the toilet, but that was basically all I had. I started searching Pinterest for any and all ideas and slowly started finding some inspiration.
So I started with the shelves which I got from Michaels, I just had no clue what I wanted to put on them. I will say that after I ordered them I immediately worried that they were going to clash horribly with my wood frame mirror which they would be right next to. But luckily when they arrived they didn't clash and I actually liked the combo more than I thought it would. Plus another bonus was that it was way less echoy in there as soon as we got the shelves up.
The next step kind of fell into my lap when the hubs and I went to Ikea and I saw these small faux plants with these cute little gallivanted pots. I knew I couldn't put the real deal in there since there is zero natural light but this was a great alternate. I chose different kinds since I had two shelves and I wanted variety. Those turned out to be real cheap as well but doesn't look really cheap.
I started searching for a little sign to put in there as well. And let me just say that there is a shocking amount of bathroom signs available out there. Of course I headed over to Etsy because I'm all about the small business. I found a cute little sign at MelDenver shop and knew it was exactly what I wanted.
Originally I wanted to get a little bin or crate in order to hold toilet paper but after further thinking about it I decided I couldn't get something small enough to fit on the shelf especially with the plant, plus I wasn't fond of the idea of putting it on the back of the toilet. I wanted to make the shelves at least a little functional. So in the end I just decided to just stack it on the second lower shelf and I actually liked it a lot.
And that was all I did for the shelves. I didn't want to crowd them. The only other thing that you can't see that's in there is fragrance spheres. That bathroom tends to not smell great sometimes. Connor still uses a potty seat and those things just plain suck. Add to that we keep that door closed to keep Emma from playing in the toilet - because yes she is that girl. So sometimes it just smells all closed up. I'm not a fan of those plug-ins but I found spheres and I love them. They have worked wonders.
My wall decor took awhile to find. I just couldn't settle on something. But finally I found a sign that I loved in the end. It took awhile to get here but I found that it was well worth it in the end. I love love love it! This one again comes from an Etsy shop, WordsEaseSome1.
The unseen things I did was to get some bins to organize under the sink. I got a plunger. I also updated the towels. The towels I got from yet another Etsy shop, TheLongestThread. I love the Turkish towels. I hate them as body towels but love them as hand towels, and they are perfect in this bathroom.
I love the change to the bathroom. Total the changes for everything including all those things unseen was $222. For buying small, which can be a little more expensive, it turned out good and I'm happy with the price and the bathroom as a whole.
And now that means it's time to move on to another area and get designing.
