I'm not a plant person. I'm horrible at keeping things alive.
I have a few plants in my yard but they are only alive because I haven't touched them. I don't have to move them in the winter. They are hard to kill. Although I bet I could still figure out how to kill them. I'm just not good with plants.
However, there is one.
I've had him for nine years and he is still alive. And yes, I'm saying he because he is in fact a he and he is in fact more than just a plant. He's my buddy. He's been all over with me. He's been through good and bad with me. He's had good and bad moments himself actually.
So I would like to proudly introduce: Herbert, the fifth member of our little family.
I know he doesn't look like much but this little guy means a lot to me. Here's the story behind Herbert....
When I was a freshman in college I lived in a suite with five other girls. One day on the girls came back with little tiny plants for all of us that were $.25 each. Not exactly the most expensive thing in the world, but cute enough. They were all different and we all claimed one. I planted my little girl, gave him some water, and put him the window. We all decided they needed names but I struggled to name him. One of my friends gave him a name, but I couldn't remember it. So it was quickly changed to Herbert. Over the course of that year he grew. By the time I went home that summer he needed a bigger pot. And for the last nine years this little guy has grown and been with me.
He's had a rough little life, mostly - okay all - thanks to me. He's been slammed in a window, he's been tipped over and lost a lot of his dirt numerous times, he's been forgotten to be water. But yet he hangs on. Apparently he's a fighter. If only I could figure out what kind of plant he is....
