The Unpleasant Side

As awesome as being a mom is, sometimes being a mom kind of sucks. Mostly it's just plain awesome. But there are things that aren't so much fun about it. So here's a few of the things I really don't like so much about being a mom:

+ Cleaning up throw-up // Doesn't anyone like this job? I always had a gag reflex when I even smelled throw-up before I was a mom so I worried about my ability to do this particular job when the kid was born. But turns out when she does get sick, problem-solving-cleaning-up-taking-care-of-her mode kicks in and I don't think much of the smell. It's not pleasant by any means but I get through it much better than I ever thought I would. Plus, I can't count the times I have actually gotten throw-up on and that's probably less fun.

+ Giving the kid medicine // You would think I was torturing her the way she screams. Giving our kid medicine is a two-person job. One of us has to hold her down and the other has to get the medicine in her. I hate doing it every time. Luckily she's rarely sick.

+ Clipping fingernails // As she has gotten older it has gotten easier, but mostly it still sucks. She fights and her nails are so small. It's just not fun. I have been successful so far not clipping her fingers (or toes) off but I'm not overly fond of it. However this job has gotten easier since for the first time not long ago, she brought me the fingernail clippers and offered me her hand. But that doesn't make her fingers any less small.

+ Changing diapers // Do I need to say more? Babies and toddlers go through a lot of diapers, that's just the way it is and they aren't always pleasant. Sometimes the worse part is catching the kid in order to actually do the changing.

+ Meal time // The kid has always been a good eater but since hitting 2, we are in a constant battle over food. She wants to snack all the time. I want her to eat actual meals. I hate the every day fight to get her to eat. It's less than fun. There's always screaming, crying, begging, pleading. And that's all from me; I'm only half joking. Any time we go anywhere or are off our schedule, we have to start all over on our routine and getting her to eat. There are days that I just dread any time there is food involved.

+ Bedtime/Naptime Battle // Who's been there?! Hands up! Generally the kid does pretty well but the timer goes off to head upstairs for bed or quiet time and almost immediately there is crying (almost always fake) and throwing herself on the floor. She does eventually give in but it's another part of the day I sometimes dread. I love nap time and I'm a fan of my free time after bedtime but the fight to get there makes me want to pound my head against the wall. I mean seriously kid, it comes every day. It's not like it's a big surprise.

I'm sure there are more things because frankly being a mom is hard. It's constant and never-ending. You can also check out Sometimes Being a Mom is Boring... for more examples of day-to-day life and how it's not always fun time. But despite this unpleasant list and the list of ways that being a mom is boring, it's the best experience. I'm raising a tiny human being. I'm helping her become who she is and that's kind of fun. For all the times she makes me want to pull out of my hair, there is a hundred more times that she makes me smile.

My brother-in-law recently said that raising a kid is a lot of work. And it is. It's endless. It's my job to teach her and keep her safe. It's my job to help her learn to make the right decisions now that will carry her through the rest of her life. It's my job to be there and feed her and keep her clean and clothed. And about a million other things.

So despite the unpleasant things and the boring things, I wouldn't change it for the world.

Now if you'll excuse me, my kid has been quiet for too long by herself....

xo, B
