Another two weeks of school. It's hard to believe that this is the new normal but since we have now made it through five weeks of it I guess it must be true. We have definitely fallen into a bit of a routine now. Some days and weeks are better than others.
Week four was a tough week. The kids were all over the place and couldn't seem to focus on school so we just did the bare minimum and I was okay with that. Poor Connor just doesn't completely understand - which makes sense because he's four. So he asked me why he couldn't go back to school because he couldn't see the "conna virus" and he just wanted to go back. There is not a lot worse than seeing your four year old sad. The abrupt of it all has been hard for him and I just feel so bad for him.
But we pressed on because that's all we can do.
Week Four
Like I said before this week was a rough one. Addie couldn't seem to focus and just didn't want to do any school work. She rushed through everything she did do and was just all over the place. So we just did what we could and moved on. It was also a rough week because the weather cooled down and it was a bit rainy which meant we couldn't really go outside. That definitely didn't help the situation.
But we kept with our normal fun projects throughout the week which meant we did some baking. We were going to make some chocolate ginersnap cookies that Addie picked out from a book but Rob couldn't find something we needed from the grocery store so we decided to go with just regular chocolate chip cookies. Then we all proceeded to eat them all in just three days. But the kids had fun helping make them.
Our science experiment was called Fireworks in a jar this week. And Addie told me this was her second favorite behind Erupting Lemons. Basically we filled one of my vases 3/4 of the way full of water. Then in a separate bowl we used 4 tbsp of vegetable oil. They both got to chose two colors and put 3-4 drops of each of those colors into the oil. We gave it a stir to break the food coloring into smaller drops then poured the oil and coloring into the water. We waited then the food coloring separated from the oil and shot down into the water. We did it three different times and the kids loved it.
Then we finished the week with our art projects which was bouncing frogs. I found this idea on Pinterest (like the science experiments). You could buy a template for a couple bucks but I thought the kids would have more fun just painting their lily pads and frogs. So I just found a couple of line cut-outs online, printed them and cut them myself. Then I let them paint. We waited for them to dry then assembled. They thought that was pretty fun too.
Week Five
This week definitely started off better than the previous week and I hoped we could keep that up for the remaining four weeks left of school (isn't that nuts?!)
This week we decided to make some Lemon Cookies. It was a simple recipe and the kids mostly just wanted to eat lemons but we definitely enjoyed those cookies even if the recipe didn't make very many.
Our science project this week was called Elephant Toothpaste and definitely was a hit with the kids, including Emma who couldn't get enough of it. It did turn out pretty cool. Although it didn't have the eruption it could have had because I didn't have quite the right thing, it was still cool and their faces say it all.
Then we finished out the week with an art project. I printed off some Dandelion outlines that they were supposed to use their fingerprints to complete. They went off the directions but they had fun finger painting so that's all that matters.
So that's a wrap on the last couple of weeks of us here at home. It's hard to believe we are done to just four weeks left of school. I want to say it has flown by and in some ways it has but in so many ways it has all just drug by. But we are getting through and soon we are going to be into summer then looking forward to [hopefully] going back to school in August.
