I think the closer we get to the end of the year the harder it is getting. I noticed the last few years (pre-k for Addison and kindergarten), the last month or so was a huge struggle. We just fought every step of the process from getting out of bed to breakfast to getting ready for school. It's just a normal kid thing. However that has become about ten times worse because instead of being able to get through the fight, I have to be the one to do the school stuff. And it's just not as much fun as spending the day with friends at school. But like I have said about a million times, this is our reality and luckily we are so close to the end of the school year.
So we had yet another week of school! Connor is definitely getting harder to focus in because he misses his classroom and his friends even if it was only half day. I can't do all the things that his amazing teacher did for him but I'm doing my best. All I can hope for is that they can actually go back in August and have some kind of normal school year.
But I digress...
When I was trying to come up with our projects for the week I asked Connor what we should bake for the week. And he told me pie so I went looking for an easy pie recipe. I found a pretty simple Blueberry Pie recipe so that's what we did.
It was truly really simple with a store-brought pre-baked pie crust, we just made the filling and that was it. It worked out because the day we did that was the day Whiteman AFB did their flyover (which I don't have any pictures of because I was wrangling three kids outside in the front yard), and we spent a good chunk of time outside playing that morning. But the pie was delicious and it didn't take us long to finish it off!
Science day is becoming harder and harder for me though. I am not science-minded at all. And to be honest it's hard to find engaging, fun and interesting experiments for two different ages. But I think I'm doing okay with it so far. This week's science experiment fast became one of their favorites we have done so far. We poured vinegar into a bottle then put some baking soda into the balloon. We put the balloon on the top of the bottle then emptied the baking soda into the bottle and that blew the balloon up. They loved it. We had just barely finished out first balloon when they were running off to find my iPad to Facetime with my parents to show them their science experiment for this week.
And last for the week was our art project. Somehow the week prior watercoloring had come up so I said we could watercolor for this week's project. They had never done it before and now they are asking me to do it again. I had some watercolor paper and I brushes that hold the water inside and you just squeeze to release a little water out as you go. I had both watercolor palettes and some watercolor pencils. I drew out a flower on their paper and let them go to town. They both loved it. (In fact I ended up doing some watercoloring in my bullet journal later that day because it looked like a lot of fun. And it was a lot of fun to do. I would love to do so much more with watercolor in the future because I found it relaxing and fun despite some little hands trying to touch everything but that's just Emma for ya.)
So that was our week. Overall it was a bit of a fight to get going most days. Addie's morning writing prompt took her longer than it should have every morning because focusing is hard. But we did finish our book we were reading together, Sideway Stories from Wayside School, and we are moved on to our next one. We have three weeks left of school then we are going to be slowing down on all our weekly projects because mama needs a break. But overall the week went well and the kids enjoyed it when I could get them to focus.
