Decorate with Me: Kitchen Counter

So my attempt with decorating our house is continuing. This time with the kitchen counter. Okay, here me out because I know it seems pretty weird. This counter is pretty much central to our main floor of our house. It's part of the kitchen but not really since it's not one I would use to prep food. It might be handy for laying out food if we were to eat in the dining room but my dining room is taken over by Lego so that's not possible right now. But mostly it just ends up with a place to drop everything and I hate it. So I left the bathroom, turned left and came to this counter and this was my next focus.

Truthfully I didn't take any pictures of the counter before I got to it. But it was a mess. I originally started by putting things up there that were in our old kitchen on some shelves. But it was all very flat and just didn't look good. So I then started taking things back down again which left it very empty. And truthfully that counter seems to be our catch-all counter. Everyone drops everything there, which drives me crazy since it literally seems to be right in the middle of the house.

So my goal was to make it so it didn't completely drive me crazy. I think I mentioned this before but I am not great with home decor items. I have a hard time deciding and I just don't know what will look good together. I want to go with a look that will last and won't go out of style. I want to keep the house feeling light and bright. I want to keep it fun while just looking nice.

I loved where I went with the bathroom so I decided to venture down the same path for the counter with a bit of a farmhouse, vintage type feel to the area. It's still a counter that we use so I needed it to still have functional space as well.

I knew I wanted something that would sit like another shelf in order to add height, but I wasn't sure what would do that for me. So of course I went back to Pinterest because where else would I go?! All I knew for certain was that I didn't want something specifically for kitchen use, I didn't need it kitchen functional. And truthfully although it isn't completely finished I do love how it came together and how it looks.

I started by looking for my shelf because I knew the height. But it was weirdly hard to find. I eventually found this one at Hobby Lobby, but it wasn't exactly cheap so I had to wait for it to go on sale. As I waited for it to go on sale I kept looking for what I wanted on this counter and ended up running into this shelf on the Kohl's website for half the price and even cheaper when the shelf is 50% off at Hobby Lobby, so I jumped on it! (Unfortunately I can't find it now at Kohl's but I will link the one at Hobby Lobby.)

Once I had the shelf I had to decide how to decorate it. I ended up putting those gray and yellow towels in there that I already had. I haven't completely decided that I wanted to keep those or if I will eventually change them out but I like them for now. In the other side are what looks like a few small plates. And that's pretty much what they were. I was originally looking for some Rae Dunn design bowls or the like to put in there but couldn't find anything I loved, but I did happen to have some of these small plates in my China set so I went with those and I actually really like the simplicity of it.

The next purchase was my Bakery container and the metal container which I got from the same shop on Etsy. After I got my Bakery container I opened it and of course realized it was empty, but I decided that I should definitely use that it keep all our masks. So if you were to open it you would find all our masks in there and it truly works perfectly to keep them close to the door but hidden.

I have been wanting more plants around the house but of course I have to be careful of what kind of I get. I don't want to accidently kill the cat but I also don't want her to just straight up eat it either. So I found this guy who we named Harry. He's still adjusting to life here and looks half dead and half alive, but he's hanging in. He's actually a Banana String plant and he's pretty cool in all his glory.

The stack of books was quite a challenge to get in the first place. So those are actual books with the covers ripped off then stamped (it was my choice of words) and tied together. I didn't want to go with our names because I thought it would be a little weird but we are always joking about how it's chaos around here so I went with this saying and I love it. I got it from another shop on Etsy (I love supporting the small businesses out there!)

I will say that if you decide to go with this shop that her stuff is really good but her ship time is crazy long. And about half of the reviews say that their stuff "got lost" in the mail. I was one of those people who had to contact her regarding my order that "got lost." She told me that she shipped a new one out to me right away, yada yada but being an Etsy business owner myself and based on the information I was getting I think it was more than my order got lost with her and said it shipped when it didn't. I don't know exactly but be warned that the product was good but it was a weird situation.

I next got the beads and heart. The beads are farmhouse style beads from another shop on Etsy, and they turned out really cute. My actually arrived broken and after snapping her a picture she immediately sent me out a new set. She was great to work with for sure. The little heart was just a fun touch that I wanted to add in and I bet you can guess it but I got it from yet another Etsy shop. She definitely has some super cute, affordable wood items that her shop deserves a look.

My last purchase was this adorable scale. This is actually a working clock and I think it is beyond cute. I'll let you guess where I got it from...a shop on Etsy. I liked how it gave me some extra height and dimension to the area.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out overall. I have thought about getting a cute little sign to put here as well but I'm still undecided so this is how it will be for now. I have always thought about switching this around seasonally because that could definitely be fun as well.

However I have an area that I don't so much love....

This seems to be my functional corner of the world. I have seem Kleenex box covers so Rob is going to put one together for me here. But I don't have a good solution for the hand sanitizer or the diapers so for now those are just there. And you know I can live with it because in general this area looks so much better and I just love it so much better. It's the first thing I see when I come down the stairs and it definitely makes me happy now, no more cringing!

So like I said I'm not completely done with it but I'm pretty happy for now and are close enough to done to declare it so! So now I'm moving on to a new area. I'll give you a hint, it involves one of the kids.
