Emma Lynn: 20 Months

Dear Emma:

You are something else. I have never met someone so small with such a big personality. You definitely don't let yourself get overshadowed by your big brother and sister.

Lately you have been having trouble setting at night because you think you are going to miss out on things, plus you tend to get tangled in your blanket and you definitely don't like that. For a long time you wanted all kinds of stuffed animals and books with you in your crib but lately you have wanted nothing but you, your pillows, Speedy and your blanket.

Talking has been so hit or miss lately. There are days that you are super clear and you don't want to stop talking and other days you barely say a word. You do seem to understand and often respond to what we are saying but more often you just ignore us, especially if you are doing something you know you shouldn't. I think the talking will continue to improve once your brother and sister go back to school because you will be able to actually get a word in. But until then we just get by with what communicating you do do and with what little listening you do.

Lately you have figured out that we can't force you to eat, so you have become a somewhat picky eater. You have been trying to eat as little as possible during meals then just wait for snack time. You have been hating me lately because as soon as breakfast is over you are already trying to get snacks but I make you wait. So some mornings are a little rough but you aren't going to learn otherwise. You are definitely excited when snack time comes around.

I can't say that you have been too interested in any toys lately. Mostly you just want things you can't have. You like to pull the silverware out of the drawer. You have been interested in the foil drawer and emptying the box of baggies. You like to pull out all my pots and pans then pulling out all my cooking utensils. You reach for anything you can get up on the counters and hope to come up with something of interest, and almost always something you shouldn't have. That's pretty much the best way to describe our current state: always getting into things you shouldn't.
Truthfully your biggest interest lately has been Stella. You can't seem to get enough of her but she has definitely had enough of you. You follow her around the house, pull her tail too often, and hunch down and just watch her in whatever hiding spot she has put herself in. That poor cat is too old for the likes of you for sure.

But when you do play with toys you have taken up an interest in trains. You aren't great at building train tracks because you are always trying to use the hill pieces on flat ground but you are trying. Your second favorite thing is books. You just adore books. You definitely have your favorites but you are pretty much interested in any book you can get your hands on. You have been enjoying when we have been able to go for walks lately. We have been taking shorter walks in order to let you walk and you love it. It all makes sense because you basically are always on the move.

You are just something else. You have a big personality. You love what you love and you will let you know when you come across something you don't. You adore your siblings. You are just so amazing and funny and adorable. I love you so much.

Love, Mama
